Maintaining the security of your credit and debit card information is always important. The growing number of recent malware attacks on retailers, though, demands heightened attention from each of us. It is important to closely monitor your payment card accounts and report unusual activity to FSG. Some of the latest and largest data breaches below.


Chick-fil-A

Chick-fil-A confirmed that they are investigating suspicious payment card activity that seems to have originated at some of its restaurants. Chick-fil-A noted that in the event the breach is substantiated, "customers will not be liable for fraudulent charges [and that] it will pay for identity protection services to those affected, including credit monitoring."

Staples

On October 20, Staples, Inc. also confirmed that consumer credit and debit card data from some of their Northeastern US stores had been hacked. The company assured that, "customers are not responsible for any fraudulent activity on their credit cards that is reported on a timely basis."

Kmart, Dairy Queen

Kmart and Dairy Queen have joined Home Depot and other major corporations in the growing list of credit and debit card breaches. Krebs on Security reported on October 10 that "Dairy Queen [confirmed a] breach at 395 stores," and Sears Holding Co. "recently discovered that point-of-sale registers at its Kmart stores were compromised by malicious software that stole customer credit and debit card information." UPS

UPS announced that customer information from 51 store locations within 24 states have been compromised. According to UPS, although customer names, addresses, email addresses and card information were included in the breach, no fraud has been detected.

Home Depot

On Sept. 8, Home Depot confirmed that their payment data systems were breached, which could potentially impact customers who used a payment card at their U.S. or Canadian stores in 2014, from April to September. At this point the malware used in the recent breach has been eliminated from their U.S. and Canadian networks.

Home Depot reports having completed a major payment security project that provides enhanced encryption of payment card data at point of sale in U.S. stores, offering significant new protection for customers.

Customers of Home Depot will not be liable for any fraudulent charges to their accounts, and Home Depot is offering free identity protection services for the next 12 months, including credit monitoring, to any customer who has shopped at a Home Depot store in 2014, from April on.

FAQs

How do I know if my card has been compromised?

If you used a debit or credit card in Home Depot stores from April to September of 2014, it can be assumed that your card information has been exposed. Online purchases at the retailer are excluded from the data breach. If we are notified that your account is at risk for fraud, you will received a letter followed by a new debit card.


What information was compromised?

Home Depot reports that the current investigation is still ongoing to determine what information was breached. However, at this point, no evidence exists that Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) for debit cards have been compromised.


Should I cancel my debit card?

There is no need to cancel your card . FSG will notify impacted customers and mail a new debit card regardless in order to help prevent fraud from occurring. As a general rule, if FSG Bank credit or debit cards are connected with a breach, FSG issues new cards to the impacted individuals as soon as we are notified.
